A great getaway, Somerset County is jam-packed with festivals, fairs, nature and fun (2024)

Somerset is an amazing small American hometown.

Just an hour away from Pittsburgh, it is a good destination to get away and relax from the busy city life. Although it’s a small town, there’s still a lot to do.

In Somerset County you’ll find quant and charming shops and eateries.

Outdoor recreation abounds in this four-season destination. In winter, visitors are drawn to three first-class ski resorts and miles of cross-country trails.

Those who prefer warm-weather activities flock to our state parks, biking and hiking trails, and waterways. Some 42 scenic miles of the Great Allegheny Passage pass through the county, as part of the 330-mile bicycle trail, connecting Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. Travel through history on the National Highway (Route 40) and the Lincoln Highway (Route 30).

Somerset County is jam-packed with upcoming festivals and fairs. And as the seasons change, some of the most memorable scenery the state has to offer.

Every season has its own stories. Make yours in Somerset County.

How sweet it is!

If you see steam rising from a sugar camp, you will know maple season is upon us.

The sweetest tree in Pennsylvania is the sugar maple. Its sap is used to make pure maple syrup. Tapping the trees consist of drilling a 7/16” hole about 1½” deep and inserting a plastic or steel spile. Maple syrup is made by boiling the thin sap of the sugar maple tree in large shallow pans over a very hot fire until most of the water in the sap has evaporated to syrup. As much as 40 to 45 gallons of sap are needed to produce 1 gallon of syrup. Warm sunny days and cold nights are ideal for sap flow.

The maple season usually starts in the middle of February and may last four to eight weeks, depending on weather conditions.

Mark your calendars for the 2025 Maple Weekend Taste & Tour in and around Somerset County: March 1-2 and March 8-9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Free tours, maple products to sample, multiple locations and so much more.
