How ecological is Zomer van Antwerpen?

Every year Zomer van Antwerpen takes up the challenge to be as sustainable as possible. The restaurants offer seasonal products. We do not use disposable cups, plates or cutlery. All waste is sorted. Printed matter is made with recycled paper and environmentally-friendly ink. The décors are largely created with discarded objects. The signs are made from reusable materials. Want to know more about our ecological efforts? Take a look at www.zva.be or discover them on location.

Is Zomer van Antwerpen for everyone?

Zomer van Antwerpen is for everyone: young people, adults, families, and people with a limitation. Some shows are less suitable for children; others are intended for the whole family. The most beautiful show on earth

You can watch the sun set anywhere, but it is a truly magnificent experience on our renovated look-out and hangout next to the Scheldt River. Our loyal bleachers had seen better days. It was time for something new. The result is worthy of a sunset: a powerful throne that’s embedded in a décor of sun, sand, water and air in a very natural way. Come try it out! You can enjoy the most beautiful spectacle on earth in peace and quiet every single evening, but the effect is always different. During the day you can relax with a beverage, an exciting book or in good company. Want to have a BBQ with family or friends? Our grill is ready. You only have to bring charcoal and some sausages or sardines. The moment when the sun will set is listed in the calendar. It is best to arrive half an hour earlier because the spectacle starts at twilight.

This year the Zomerbar is moving to the Sloepenweg. It rubs up against the curve in the Scheldt River, and in the distance you can see the lights of the port. The Zomerbar was given a new look specially for this location: imagine a maritime atmosphere with summery details like bamboo and other exotic elements. The Zomerbar has moved to a different location but the instant holiday feeling and relaxed atmosphere remain intact. Children can play in the fountain while adults enjoy the sun in an easy chair or play a round of petanque. The atmospheric bar serves sunny cocktails and other beverages. The entire family can eat delicious, seasonal dishes at an honest price in the two restaurants. If the weather isn’t ideal you can keep dry under the beach huts. The Zomerbar remains the heart of the Zomer van Antwerpen festival.Tickets and info are available in the summer house at the entrance. You can often acquire a last minute circus ticket at the Zomerbar via the waiting list. 3

BOOKS AND LISTENING COMPARTMENTS

A BUSTLING FILM TRIP

For the fifth time in a row you’ll find the SUMMER LIBRARY at the Zomerbar. It is a special place for children (big and small) who love books and stories.

In RE: FRESCO you lay down together with 30 other spectators on a large round seat. Above your heads the air comes to life. RE: FRESCO takes you on a bustling film trip to the music of Mauro Pawlowski.

The Comp.Marius SUMMER LIBRARY is a great place to read and listen to stories. It includes an extensive collection of picture books and read-aloud books for little ones, fun stories for children who can already read and books full of childhood memories for adults.

You get a unique film experience while lying down. Like a voyeur you look from different perspectives at people who are struggling with nature, man versus woman, naked. Slowly you sink away in the colourful patchwork quilt, like an astronaut who looks at earth from space.

dur. 30 min

But there is more! Stories for young and old are read out loud under the book tree every day. This year we have placed the best audio plays amongst the bookshelves. Three times a week you can collaborate on the big Summer Book.

RE: FRESCO is a free event. Go inside, take off your shoes, lie down on your back and allow yourself to be swept away by the images and the music. The show is suitable for everyone who can bear a bit of nudity.

DIRTY LITTLE STORIES, PART 2

The City of Antwerp received an imposing fountain as a gift in 1962. Some called it stately thing; others thought it was obscene. The fountain only spouted for a few weeks. Born storyteller and handyman Geert Hautekiet discovered the remains of the fountain in a leaking Antwerp shed and investigated the story behind it. As it turned out, it suited his latest trilogy perfectly. Dirty Little Stories come from the abdomen and make you wet. He restored the fountain, added a little something here and there then turned it into a fully fledged musical instrument. He accompanies himself during a series of challenging stories on that rusty water organ. The leading roles are lust, limbs and the body. We cannot guarantee that you will stay dry during this musical, titillating fountain narrative. This racy one-man show will descend on an unknown part of exotic Antwerp. You are seated in the open air around the musical fountain. Please take the weather (and perhaps a few spatters) into account when choosing your clothing. BLACK SEED is suitable for everyone, unless you have sensitive ears. 7

Doctor Faustus is the oldest and wisest man in the country, but that is not enough for him. He makes a deal with Mephisto, a charming envoy from hell. Mephisto bestows insight, knowledge and power on Faustus, but Faustus wants more. He also wants joie de vivre and passion. The devil allows him to fall hopelessly in love with an unattainable girl. From that moment on Faustus is a goner. Theatre FroeFroe’s puppets tell an intriguing story about lust and desire, about love and insight. The décor looks southern. Musicians support the show with a beautiful mix of fado and flamenco. Get ready for a crazy ride through hell! Theatre FroeFroe invites you to sit on open-air bleachers. Be sure to bring a warm sweater or raincoat if the weather requires it. Due to its demonic character, this show is less suitable for small children. 9

Sia Tolno grew up along Guinea’s turbulent border with Sierra Leone. She found consolation in her music: she sings a happy mishmash of English, Creole and African languages and tells stories about strong women. Afrobeats that combine forces with choral songs, funk and rumba; the music is a tribute to life.

The hippest band in Southern Italy brings the ancient ritual of pizzica tarantata to life via traditional and original songs in their dialect. It is said that this ritual can cure a tarantula bite through the wild trances and a strongly modern sound mixed with original compositions.

The Garifuna, descendants of escaped slaves who are proficient fishermen, live in Belize. On their beaches the old dances and music lived on. The result is a collection of melancholic but danceable songs that are inspired by their unique Afro-American and indigenous heritage. A great party without a doubt!

Strong African percussion and four trombones turn this orchestra into an impressive band. Oderquis Revé y su Changüi is Cuban culture that makes every Cuban feel tied together. Oderquis has been performing for more than 40 years so he knows how to build a salsa party!

Pasto is a city in Colombia that is famous for its colourful carnival. The city is located high in the Andes and Bambarabanda lives there in the shadow of the volcano. Their music is just as lively and exuberant as the carnival and caliente as the volcano. With lots of energy, wild costumes and a theatrical show they light up every square where they perform.

Neuza grew up with her grandmother on Fogo, one of the ten Cape Verde islands. Her mother, a singer in bars, died very young but she gave her daughter a beautiful voice. Neuza is tipped as the newest Cape Verde star. Enjoy the Fogo Island rhythms like talaia baxo, rabolo and samba.
