A qualitative research: how was the objectives and principles of public health tackled in the public health coursebook by Julius Hirsch and Muhiddin Erel

Hist Philos Med., 2022

Merve Gublu, Fuat İnce

Objective: We aimed to assess the subject of "Purpose and Principles of Public Health" in the work titled "Public Health Coursebook" dated 1938, share the information we obtained and compare it with today's information. Methods: Multiple document analysis method in qualitative research was used to design the study. First of all, original edition of the Public Health Coursebook was purchased from a website with rare books. The book was thoroughly examined and the "Purpose and Principles of Hygiene (Public Health)" part in the first volume was evaluated. The information in the book was compared with today's information according to the methodology of history of medicine. Secondly, the Republic Archive Catalog of the Turkish Presidency of the Republic of Turkiye State Archives was scanned. Results: After the University Reform movement in Turkiye in 1933, the Faculty of Medicine was established at Istanbul University. In the same period, Turkiye embraced many scientists who fled abroad due to Nazi regime. One of them, Julius Hirsch, was appointed as the head of Hygiene Institute, and Turkish physician Muhiddin Erel became his assistant. The Purpose and Principles of Public Health are discussed in the first volume of the Hygiene Textbook, which they both prepared together. The book, defines public health as "the science of protecting and maintaining health". Public health has been handled with a holistic approach. The aim of measures to be taken regarding public health is explained as the prevention of untimely death, prevention of diseases and protection of the ability to work even in advanced ages. It has been specifically stated that the common goal is to protect public health and ensure the continuity of health despite the practices that vary by time, place and cultures. The documents in the State Archives are about the admission of immigrant scientists to Turkiye, Hirsch's Turkish citizenship and appointments. Conclusion: Despite all this time, it has been observed that the issues mentioned in the study largely overlap with the public health aspect of medicine and today's perspective. We think that it is important to bring similar books to literature by evaluating them with field experts.

1987: WHO Educational Handbook for Health Personnel

Iraqi Medical Education, GY Mustafa Alsheikh

Originally, in 1969, the first edition was written for teachers of the health sciences. Subsequently, however, the Handbook was used above all by hundreds of participants in meetings organized by WHO or held withWHO assistance (educational planning workshops, teachingm ethodology seminarse, tc.......). A survey of 2OO users carried out in 1975 revealed the following opinions. A very small minority (10%) felt that the Handbook should be supplied only to participants in controlled educational activities (workshops, seminars, courses, etc.) or reserved for "teachers of teachers". Tbe maiority, bouteuer, felt that dissemination should be as uside as possible, and be directed to all teachers of health sciences at all levels, to health administrators with staff supervision responsibilities, and to students, so as to help them to draw maximum benefit from their learning activities and participate in their organization. The latest poll, conducted in 1978, produced very apposite comments from about 100 users in all parts of the world and the consensus is still in favour of the widest possible distribution. Many teachers of the various health professions (dentists, nurses, sanitary engineers, physicians, pharmacists, etc.) have stated that the Handbook answers their needs, but some think that the author's training as a physician has still too often biased the choice of examples. A further effort has been made with this 1981 edition to produce a text better suited to eagryone working in the health professions.lt is, however, very difficult to strike a perfect balance, for many reasons.

Is there the gap in public health literature in Europe?

Annals of agricultural and environmental medicine : AAEM, 2013

Barbara Niedzwiedzka

The growing expectations for the effectiveness of public health increase the demand for scientific literature, concerning research, reviews and other forms of information. The bibliographic databases are of crucial importance for researchers and policy makers. The objective of this study is to estimate the supply of scientific literature related to public health in selected European countries, which are available to a wide range of users. Analysis of the number of bibliographic records on topics related to public health was based on searches in Ovid MEDLINE (R) in May and June 2011. According to MeSH terms, 11 keywords and names of 13 European countries were used in the search. Publications from the years 2001-2010 were analyzed. A number of publications indexed under 'public health', and related to selected countries were compared with the size of the population of those countries, GDP, total expenditure on health and burden of disease (DALYS's). The most popular topic ...

PrefaceThis material, initially, is written and provided to students in 2008. It has been continuously on use with no major revision until 2010.In 2010, the material was well revised and made fit to the recently approved national curricula for health, medical & family science students of Hawassa university and subsequently up to fifty centrally duplicated copies of the material were distributed to three related libraries of the university. Recently, in 2011, the material is reviewed by external & internal reviewers and APPROVED by DC-05/03 of School of Public & Environmental Health. In my four years of teaching experience on Health Education Course as Health Educationalist, I clearly observed that there is critical shortage of Health Education reference materials. The only available reference is the one which is written by Getnet Mitikie of Addis Ababa university in 2001, and this by itself is not well tailored even to the then curricula of health science students and not exhaustive in some important areas like Methods & Materials of Health Education and Research in Health Education( Methods of Qualitative Research ). This material, therefore, will significantly improve the availability of tailored reference material for relatively many categories of health, medical and family science students in the university, and can be indicated as a Supporting reference by lecturers in the fields of Public Health, Behavioral & Social Sciences in general and Health Education in particular for their undergraduate & graduate students as it is made to cover almost all issues related to health Education exhaustively. Finally, this material is organized in seven self-contained & logically arranged units: Introduction to health Education, Health & Human Behavior, Communication, Health Education Planning & Evaluation, Health Education Settings, Methods & Materials of Health Education and Research in health Education. The Author.
